Information Literacy Action Roundtable (ILART)
Established October 2013
The Information Literacy Action Round Table (ILART) was established under the governance of the Rhode Island Library Association in order support two goals:

  1. To build a collaborative network across library types (school, public, academic, health, and special)  to promote information literacy as critical set of skills and understandings for full participation in society and therefore an essential component of library service;
  2. To provide a forum for discussion and communication of information literacy-related strategies, activities, and programs for all types of libraries and librarians throughout the state to support the needs of Rhode Islanders.
The information needs of Rhode Islanders in the 21st century are ever changing. The Information Literacy Action Round Table will identify areas of action and develop strategies that librarians can use to reach out to all Rhode Islanders to raise awareness and facilitate education in all aspects of information literacy: information and technology, civic and social, health, and financial literacy. As people need to become "transliterate" in today's society, libraries of all types need to be prepared to play a key role in this skill building, at all levels. Therefore this roundtable will contribute to the development of library practices and programs that effectively support these needs.

Organization:  The Information Literacy Action Round Table (ILART) is governed by two co-coordinators and an advisory board consisting of three members.

Membership: Any RILA member is eligible to be a member of ILART.

Financial Literacy Roundtable (FLRT)

Established May 2015

The Financial Literacy Round Table (FLRT) was established under the governance of the Rhode Island Library Association in order support three goals:

  1. To build a collaborative network across library types (school, public, academic, and special) and related community organizations to promote financial literacy as part of a critical set of skills for Rhode Islanders of all ages and therefore an essential component of library and community services;
  2. To provide a forum for discussion and communication related to the creation of financial literacy skills through activities and programs for patrons of all types of libraries throughout the state to support the needs of Rhode Islanders.
  3. To coordinate and manage established financial literacy education programs in RI, such as annual Money Smart Week, as well as to foster further collaboration between libraries and community organizations as part of ongoing or proposed statewide financial education initiatives.

Since Libraries of all types should and do participate in providing programming and activities for all ages and all stages of life on topics relating to financial education, awareness, and empowerment, FLRT would identify areas of action and develop strategies that librarians can use to raise awareness and facilitate education in all areas of financial literacy: basic budgeting; managing student debt; retirement planning; home purchasing; saving money through couponing; and how to prevent identity theft, workforce development skills, etc..  Therefore this roundtable will contribute to the development of library practices, programs, and statewide initiatives that effectively support these needs.

Organization:  Two co-coordinators would be appointed by the RILA Executive Board, to establish the Financial Literacy Round Table (FLRT) until the membership determines the extent of governance required.

Membership: Any RILA member would be eligible to be a member of FLRT, though non-members could attend and participate in events and activities planned by FLRT.
